Step into the world of bamboo design
Engage manually with bamboo by creating your own furniture, products or architectural concept models under the guidance of designers and architects from the Bamboo U team, as well as the master carpenters from the IBUKU team.
In this 5-Day Bamboo Design and Carpentry Workshop we will bring your ideas to life, from working with scaled models to turning them into full-sized prototypes, this will help you understand the possibilities and limitations of bamboo as a design material. We will take you through the following stages: design brainstorm and concept modelling, exploring the creative realm of lines and volumes, experimenting with various furniture-making techniques, prototyping, realization and finishing.
Many participants of the Design & Carpentry Workshop have created real prototypes of chairs, lamps, stools, and tables and so much more. Here are some beautiful creations that participants have taken home:
DESIGNING WITH BAMBOO
Learn about bamboo design with bamboo. The objective of the workshop is to learn about bamboo through hands-on interaction, we will use bamboo from the early stages of the design process, making scaled models using handcrafted bamboo sticks until using bamboo poles, bamboo splits, flatten bamboo among others bamboo materials.
BAMBOO FACTORY TOUR
To understand bamboo, you have to understand how it grows and how to preserve it for long term use. During the guided tour through the factory, we will show you how we receive the bamboo from the farmers, the different bamboo species that we use and their applications, and how we treat and process bamboo for construction and furniture making.
TRADITIONAL BALINESE CARPENTRY & JOINERY
The Balinese people have been using bamboo as part of their traditions for centuries. Their bamboo knowledge runs deep, and is an important part of how we build with bamboo. During the workshop, the master carpenters will engage with you to share their bamboo knowledge to make your design ideas become realized.
Learn about the physical and mechanical properties of bamboo and how it wants to behave.
Discover why bamboo is often compared with steel, concrete and timber in terms of technical properties and why it is called ‘the sustainable material of the future’.
