In this module, you will meet your course facilitators, gain an understanding of how the course will run, and get an introduction to the bamboo plant and how it is utilized in construction.
In this module, we explore the geometric characteristics of bamboo, as well as its physical and mechanical properties. We also understand grading and its importance in the realm of bamboo construction.
In this section, we focus on the design of bamboo flexural and axial members. Here we look at how these members work in post-and-beam bamboo structures and how to design them for real-life situations. This includes walking through the steps to calculate the structural requirements for buildings for each type of structural member.
In this module, we understand the importance of bamboo connections and how they work. We also take a deeper look at the J-bolt connection and testing it, as it is particularly versatile in post-and-beam systems for bamboo. These are one of the most frequently used connections by Base Bahay Foundation for their Cement Bamboo Frame homes.
In this module, we look at composite-bamboo shear walls. This includes the construction systems they originated from, as well as the different components they comprise of, which can be assembled in various configurations based on a project's specific load bearing requirements.

Originally from Colombia, Luis Felipe Lopez is a leading bamboo engineer who developed the Colombian bamboo building code with the Colombian Association of Seismic Engineering (AIS).
This initiative has inspired other countries to follow in developing their own bamboo building codes.
