Treating Bamboo in
Your Backyard
Bamboo is susceptible to insects like termites, borers, the powderpost beetle, and even fungi. If not treated properly, bamboo products and structures will only last a few years before they are eaten to dust. But don’t get discouraged, there are many ways in which bamboo can be treated. In this article, we are going to talk about a special low-tech treatment option, the Vertical Soak Diffusion, or VSD.

In module 5 of the Bamboo U Online Immersion students are given the opportunity to develop their own bamboo projects. With the guidance of the Bamboo U Team they develop their design ideas into concept and structural models. Hear from alumni Sanne Eekel about her bamboo project for building a bamboo center in Uganda.
Bamboo offers design students new opportunities to understand form. This interview is with Scott Vandervoort one of our guest facilitators at Bamboo U. Scott has been teaching 3D design at Pratt Institute in New York for over 15 years, and has lectured internationally on form making. He runs training workshops on abstract visualization techniques and in developing hand eye coordination. Scott fell in love with bamboo while living in Bali in 2019. Listen in to learn more about how bamboo can help us expand our creativity and develop beautiful objects out of bamboo.
